Asian supermarkets are full of unique and exciting vegan products, from pantry staples to snacks and drinks you won’t find anywhere else.

But many vegans find shopping in Asian supermarkets overwhelming because they usually don't have a dedicated vegan section and products are scattered around the shop.

That's why I've written this guide to help you quickly look for amazing vegan products in Asian supermarkets. But keep in mind that the selection varies greatly between stores, as most are independently owned. This guide is based on finds in Brisbane, namely:

  • Sunlit Asian Supermarket
  • Genki Mart
  • Hanaro Mart

Sunlit Asian Supermarket

Many of the mochi products are vegan, but always double check the ingredients as some of them contain milk.
Vegan beef jerky like this one is delicious, but not the most eco-friendly as they are individually wrapped.

Cookies and cakes like this one have a good chance of being vegan. This particular one has a soft crumbly texture.
This brand of cookie is one of my favourites. I recommend the yam and the coconut flavours.

My favourite brand of instant noodles; the black bean sauce is rich and delicious.

Vegetarian buns are always good to buy from Asian supermarkets. This one is a bamboo shoot one.
These are glutinous rice balls with sweet sesame filling. They are usually cooked in a sweet gingery water, but simply boiling them is still delicious.

Toona sauce is one of my favourite. It has a fried spring onions/shallots taste, and is amazing in fried rice or stir-fry.
Japanese sesame dressing is delicious and I love to use this for mixing with buckwheat noodles or salad. But check ingredients carefully as many of them contain egg.

Vegetarian pho cubes like this make a good soup base
Tofu skin rolls like this is a great addition to noodle soup. They take only a minute or so to cook, but the downside is that they are quite oily.

Genki Mart

Tonkotsu broth base which is good for making ramen or soup noodles at home
Anmitsu which is a Japanese dessert that includes agar agar jelly with fruits, red bean, syrup, etc.
Vegan curry powder
Shoyu and miso instant ramen
Vegan version of the famous Weipa stock powder
Curry croquette
Yokan, which is a sweet agar agar red bean jelly
Vegan okonomiyaki sauce

Hanaro Mart

Natuur vegan chocolate almond ice cream stick
They also have two other flavours of small ice cream tubs
Vegan tofu (soy milk) soup base
Instant pumpkin cream soup base
Konjac jelly drinks
Freshly-made rice mochi
